If I understand you 100% correct I fully agree with you, especially at higher ISO's. If done properly and within bounds it is absolutely essential, no question. I don't understand why there is such resistance to NR in the BG as sometimes expressed by certain individuals. I tried to explain then, but when I saw I was going nowhere fast I just left it at that. In this particular instance it was not necessary to do NR on the BG (because of the ISO100), but if I perhaps were guilty of something it would only be because I did some selective sharpening on junior and dad only. Understandably (being feathered subjects) it could become a little bit of a tricky process, as you probably realise.
You are correct that perhaps I should have selected a higher ISO to gain somewhat on shutter speed. At 1/250 it was almost the same as the vocal length (268mm) which obviously could be a bit problematic with this long lens, especially when shooting out of the hand.
