This tight crop was possible because your focusing of the subject was of EXCELLENT QUALITY.
You had done such a great job with this register that I felt like "removing" the extra baggage by cropping.
Encreased exposure by 2 points and sharpened by 1 point .... and VOILA... !!!
This is still "YOUR" creation inspite of the W/S'ed version.

Using Photo Shop Elements:
1. cropped to make image less central and boost prominence
2. just used -2 hue +2 saturation to boost colour
3. unsharp mask to add extra sharpness

A quick workshop using Photoshop,
I cropped the picture and placed the thrush off centered
I used auto levels to adjust the tones,
I use some additional sharpening,
