This Yellow-headed Blackbird was trying to impress the girls by singing and fluffing up to appear big and strong. This photo was taken at Murray Lake near Medicine Hat.

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Icteridae

Genus: Xanthocephalus
Bonaparte, 1850
Species: X. xanthocephalus
The Yellow-headed Blackbird, Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus, is a medium-sized blackbird, and the only member of the genus Xanthocephalus.

Adults have a pointed bill. The adult male is mainly black with a yellow head and breast; they have a white wing patch sometimes only visible in flight. The adult female is mainly brown with a dull yellow throat and breast.

Their breeding habitat is cattail marshes in North America, mainly west of the Great Lakes. The nest is built with and attached to marsh vegetation. They nest in colonies, often sharing their habitat closely with the Red-winged Blackbird. During the breeding and nesting season the males are very territorial and spend much of their time perched on reed stalk and displaying or chasing off intruders.

These birds migrate in the winter to the southwestern United States and Mexico. They often migrate in huge flocks with other species of birds.

These birds forage in the marsh, in fields or on the ground; they sometimes catch insects in flight. They mainly eat seeds and insects. Outside of the nesting period, they often feed in flocks, often with other blackbirds.

This bird's song resembles the grating of a rusty hinge.

Hi Rick,
This is a nice shot from your archives: this shot of a Yellow-headed Blackbird is sharp, well coloured with difference shades in the black plumage, has a fine Bg and is well composed. Nice pose too!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hey Rick.

Good timing here getting the ruffled and crouched. I like the detail you've got even in the blacks. Nice work on the background however I feel composition could be improved by increasing space below the bird a tad.
Cheers, TFS

Hi Rick,
a very nice picture of a beautiful bird as I never seen before. The compostion and POV are very good.
On my monitor the picture is a bit dull and slightly soft.
I know these day we all use different monitors so this could be great on others. I did a WS to show what looks best on my big CRT-monitor.
Well done.

Great capture of this beautiful Blackbird with nicely ruffled feathers. I like his pose and he stands out nicely from the plain background.
Very nice composition too.

Nice shot Rick. I used to see many of these here in Calgary, but over the last few years I haven't been able to find one. Image here seems a tad soft, good color.

Are you sure that bird is singing? This guy doesn't look like a bass nor tenor nor anything in between!!!

Looks more like a huffer-puffer!

Hi Rick

Nice timing to get the fluffed up plumage while in shake mode! Lovely exposure as the details in the black are clear. Nice work and a lovely model. :-)

Really good shot. The background is excellent - nothing to distract the eye. The ruffled feathers make the shot. Well done. James

Striking color contrast on this bird, Rick.
The bright yellow and the black together are stunning.
Good range of values visible in the black plumage.
I like the pose of the bird.
