Racoon
Procyon lotor
Raton-laveur

The racoon lives from southern Canada through Mexico and Central America.

Identification
The black mask and black and yellow-white ringed tail make the racoon unmistakable. The color is a mixture of white (or yellow-white) and dark gray hairs. The length of the racoon varies from 18 to 28 inches with the tail adding another 8 to 12 inches.

Habitat
The racoon lives primarily in forests, particularly along streams and lakes. With the expansion of the suburbs into larger and larger parts of the Eastern Deciduous Forest, the racoon is now a regular part of the suburban environment. Although racoons can be relatively common, they are nocturnal and not normally seen.
I had one in my backyard in Montreal two years ago.

Food
Racoons are omnivorous and will eat just about anything including fruit and berries, insects, frogs, crayfish, bird eggs. They are commonly seen washing their food in streams and along the shores of lakes and ponds. In the suburbs they are notorious garbage can thieves.

Behavior
The racoon is nocturnal and is rarely seen in the day time. Each animal has a home range varying in size, but usually about 1 mile in diameter.
Racoons are normally silent, but when angry racoons may snarl, grow, or hiss. Racoons do not hibernate but spend their time in hollow trees or logs, rock crevices, or burrows.

Reproduction
Racoons have one brood per year born between April to June. The number of young varies between 2 to 7 with an average of 4. The young live with the mother for about 2 months and then leave her in the fall.

Notes
This racoon was taken in Parc Omega near Montebello, Quebec. Though the park is fenced, racoons live free in this area.

Technical notes:
Handheld at 3m.
Sharpened in PS.

This is probably one of the finest shots I have ever seen of a racoon. I hope you didn't get too close to it in the daylight...around here we have too many rabid racoons. Great note and fabulous image.

Hello Rene, I haven't seen a racoon here on TN before, and I enjoy his presence. Your composition is very good. He is sharp and clear, and real cute. Can they become pets? TFS, Janice

You take the best wildlife photos! He is perfectly posed, and the photo is very sharp and clear. The rocks really compliment the color of his coat. Just a lovely photo!

Beautiful shot Rene, this racoon is a real beauty, you have caught it very well.
Great texture to the fur, good depth of field and excellent note. Well done!

This little thief is about to steal your heart! Thie composition is stunning and the focus is tac sharp accross the whole Racoon.

Excellent job and thanks for posting

What more can I say that hasn't been said about this little guy? I would have to agree with everyone else, this photo is perfect, you can be very proud of this one. Sharp and clear, and perfectly posed, how did you get him to do that?
The last two nights at my house, I've turned on the porch light to find a racoon stealing the cat food they didn't eat during the day. He was WAY fatter than this one, maybe I need to feed my cats less??
Excellent shot! Well done.

Another great animal portraiture comming from you, you did best but this wouldve been even better in less dull & grey weather, ideally shouldve happen at morning sunrise.
