An unusal shot for me , a bird, trying to see what the new Nikon D200 will do.
Taken with the standard 18-70ED lens as the sigma 105macro is under investigation for being faulty, it seems to be focusing 1cm in front of the subject and in macro 1 cm ususal means not in focus of which I now have over 4500 examples, I was begining to think I could take a photo any more.
Taken at the 70mm end of the lens with me leaning / hidding against a wooden gate about 10ft-3.0m away from the nest box. camera set to single point focus and light metering and using the high contrast stripe of black to get the camera to focus quickly. In AF mode at F5.6 in the lens testing I did at the weekend this setting gave the sharpest shots, and as the camera is capable of upto 1/5000sec shots I left it to decided the speed it wanted as it was a bright and sunny afternoon.
Both birds used the same root of approach every time 1st into the tree at the side, then onto the fence about 10ft-3.0m away on the farside of the nestbox, they then moved in 2 moves along the fence top to the same places every time before swooping around to the front of the box and doing an emergancy stop before clutching the edge of the hole and diving into the hole.
why is this the male when both sexes are identical, well it became obvious that one of the had a nearly bald pach on the breast I presume this from brooding the eggs. they seemed more than happy for me to be there providing I did not move too much. though the 1st couple of times the shutter noise made them abort their approach.

Very nice shot ! Yhese little birds are so cute, it's always a pleasure to look at them. It's not always easy to get good shots of them, but you have done it perfectly ! Nice details, beautiful natural colors, wonderful composition and POV. Very well done !
Valérie.
