[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
I'm not quite sure which type of darter this is, as it was a very young, newly emerged specimen, so the colouring was not yet showing. Possibilities include Common darter Sympetrum striolatum, Vagrant darter Sympetrum vulgatum, Ruddy darter Sympetrum sanguineum and - less likely as they're scarcer - Yellow-winged darter Sympetrum flaveolum.
Actually, this particular darter had just taken its first unsteady flight and was - at the time the photo was taken - clinging on to my jeans for dear life. He was one of a number of new emergees sitting in the vegetation hemming in my favourite waterhole that morning, and maybe my moving around made him take off a little earlier than he'd otherwise have done. At any rate his first flight was a pretty short one ;-))
Once darters are on the wing it's quite difficult to get a shot in from this angle, as they seem to consider you more threatening when seen from the front (I don't blame them ;-)). But this one was not yet quite in a position to vote with its feet (or wings, as it were). After the first exertion he clearly needed a little rest before taking on the rest of the world, so I just let him sit quietly while taking a number of mug shots concentrating on the eyes and trying for F-16 in order to get as much DOF as possible.
Treatment: Crop, saturation +10, brightness +10, contrast +10, USM and resize.

And with this I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Unbelievable macro Bente. No nits. Very well done and a merry Christmas to you.

Now that is a close-up. Very good capture.

Now THAT's a macro! Fun, vibrant, dramatic, close shot, Bente! It certainly deserves its centered composition. Perhaps just a bit deeper dof, but no real complaints here. Just a fun, interesting image!

Yes,it's a great composition.Maybe a touch soft on the eyes, can it be sharpened more?
A really good photo anyway, exudes character.
Well spotted and taken.

You Say he was clinging to your jeans, and his eyes are THIS big!
Very nice Bente, this is a face I would not like to meet unxepectedly at midnight in a dark ally.
And thanks for you wicked wit - always appreciated.

Good macro-micro, Bente: picture and note.
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too and for the people whom you love.

Bente this is on superb macro the DOF is superb the whole of the compound eyes and the fons are in focus which is very rare as these sort of shots usuallly have very resticted DOF which is not the case here, congratulations on it.
As to an ident I am fairly confident that it is a commmon darter Sympetrum striolatum I have a boook that compairs the faces of the various darter for shape of eyes and the black areas under and round the eyes if you wanted I could try to scan you a copy?

Fantastic macro Bente - very sharp and clear. It's always facinating to see these eyes in large size and you captured them real well here. I fully agree with Robert about the ID.
