Testudo graeca (Adi Tosbağa) [Eng. ‘Spur-thighed Tortoise’]

*****************************

Spur-thighed Tortoise is a polytypic and middle-sized terrestrial tortoise with moderately domed carapace (its length up to 20 cm), which is widely distributed in NW Africa, Southern Europe and Balkan states, Mediterranean islands (except Cyprus), Turkey, S Russia, Azerbaijan, W Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan.. It is typically a Mediterranean species, inhabiting humid and mesic steppe, semi-steppe and forest habitats, including agriculturally used land. The head is of medium size, covered dorsally with numerous small scales, only the frontal scale is larger. There is a single prefrontal and paired supranasals. The jaw surface is smooth, not serrated, the beak is weakly hooked and tricuspid. The carapace is distinctly convex, dorsal shields are concentrically striated, usually slightly swollen. The nuchal plate is elongated; there are 5 vertebral plates, 4 costals and l0-11 marginals on each side, supracaudal is undivided. The forelimbs are anteriorly covered with large to very large heterogenous, juxtaposed scutes forming 3-6 longitudinal and 4-7 transverse rows. There is a prominent spur in the thigh region on each side. Tail is relatively short, often terminating with a claw-like tubercle. The general coloration varies in shades of dull yellow, brownish and olive, with blackish anterior and lateral margins of each dorsal plate; plastron is yellowish to brownish, usually with some dark blotches. The coloration of adults is less contrast than that of juveniles.

Spur-thighed Tortoise is a diurnal, terrestrial, relatively slowly moving tortoise. It is a herbivorous species, feeding on wide spectrum of various plants, their leaves, flowers and fruits, but occasionally also on animal carcasses. Courtship take place in the spring, mostly in the end of March, April and May. Complicated behaviour, including that female is immobilised by repeated butting and biting by male, precedes the copulation, during which males emit muffled whistling cries. Females lay 3-5 eggs in one clutch, 2-3 times per season.

The more recently described subspecies T. g. anamurensis and species T. antakyensis (sometimes accepted as a subspecies of T. graeca), both from coastal southern Turkey, and also the poorly known T. g. armeniaca (cited from Ağrı province) are viewed with skepticism/doubt among Turkish herpetologists. Therefore these three taxa were not included in the most recent lists on Turkish herpetofauna. As a general acceptance, the species is represented with two subspecies in Turkey. T. g. terrestris is known from Hatay province and SE Anatolia. In the rest parts of Anatolia and also Turkish Thrace T. g. ibera is quite widespread. The other closely related species found in Turkey (only known from European parts) is T. hermanni (Herman’s Tortoise). But it is distinguished easily from T. graeca by absence of spurs on thighs, and having a large scale/”spur” on tail-tip and also two supracaudal plates (instead of one) on Carapace, above the base of tail. T. graeca terrestris is typical by the presence of yellow colour in coloration, mainly on the head.

Populations of T. graeca are endangered mainly by overgrazing and habitat destruction, feral dogs represent another threat, mainly for clutches and juveniles, as well as pet trade.

Merhaba Bayram dostum,
This is a wonderful shot for me!
Not only because this pair of Testudo graeca are taken from a great POV with fine sharpness and natural colours, but because it reminds me of the first time we saw such a sight! In Alanya 22 years ago!
We heard a knocking sound and when we turned round we saw the male approaching the female in this way.
Thanks for sharing this fine image and reminding me of a great experience that I only have an old slide of.
Have a great weekend,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hello little bro, my neighbour today.

Another making love to day from you and this mating Tortoises.
Good pov, exellent sharpness and details.
Fine colours.

Gert

My dearest friend Bayram
Thank you for posting this detailed photo of Testudo graeca showing in the foreground their habitat in natural colours.

I do not think this species is found in South Africa. Here, all tortoises are strictly protected, not that it helps them - many still end up in cooking pots.

Many perish in the annual veld-fires in winter...

I wish you a nice week-end
Selamlar
Ingrid

Selamlar My Dear Friend,

Bayram hocam artık uzun ara veriyorsunuz. Türkçe ve Ingilizce sunum eminim zaman alıyordur. Ama büyük bir bilgi kaynağı oluşturacağından eminim. Zamanlaması harika bir çekim olmuş. Benim Kıbrıs'tan çektiğim Testudo'yu hatırlattı:) Kıbrıs'ta doğal bulunmadığını da birkez daha hatırlamış oldum:) Emeklerinize sağlık. Saygılar.

It is almost as a movie script and you find all these actors who are good at what they do; although the turtle on top looks extremely passive...reckon thats instinct of course....no lust...not outside of huumans..TFS my friend.

Onun durumu nedir?

A lovely capture of this pair of Tortoises performing an act that brings back memories from Alanya. We really couldn't make out where the knocking sound came from until we were really close and discovered two like this! A very fine low POV, great sharpness and beautiful natural colours.

Dear, little brother,
I wonder, where you were hidden to get this point of view? :-) it looks as if you had dug a hole for yourself, in order to be below the mating pair.

I added your work to my theme " Animals' sex life" thanks for sharing..
Tortoises mating appear to work hard.

We had "inherited " from the Vet injured (wired up) tortoises, and the wiring was of course obstructive :-)
Your comprehensive notes are very instructive, thank you for all the hard work

Have a nice day,
Warm greetings
Ingrid
