All the best for the new year for you and the family as well.
I hope you have enjoyed some leave and not spent too much time at work...
Thanks for the beautiful posting of this Widowbird.
I can vaguely remember a bird like this growing up in the eastern cape.
This is a very good freeze frame of the bird in flight, with lovely contrast of colors and great sharp details.
Thanks for sharing

The most impressive Widow of all widowbirds is the Long-tailed Widow with the longest tail of them all (Males). And you got it in flight, amazing. These birds are, as far as I know, very shy. So this photo is very special. Great sharpness, details, natural colours, POV and OOF BG.
The best wishes for 2010 to you, Anna and your family,

I see you have annexed that new camera and lens. This is a well detailed image of this bird in flight and knowing how they fly this was definitely not easy because of the vertical and horizontal movement. The background is also perfect.
All of the best for 2010.

Hello there Loot,
Wow! what a nice catch! Colors and details of the subject are superb. This is what i really like being a member of TN, i have this kind of opportunity to be able to see the creaures i have never seen before like this beautiful long-tailed black widowed bird. TFS and have a prosperous New Year to all of us! :-)
Best regards, Arman

Such an elegant moment captured with such great skill. Its tail is probably the most beautiful I've ever seen. You've captured it in perfect frozen state without loosing any of its sharpness. I also like the wonderful colored and soft textured BG. This background really helps to isolate the bird in flight and gives us the full focus on it.
I assume that I am probably the only one that is able to see noise in the darker feathers and especially in the tail feathers. So I guess it is more a monitor thing than that you have brightend these areas in your post processing.

What a wonderfull bird you have captured during his flight.

Beautiful image of this sleek bird in flight, Loot.
The pose in flight is truly artistic.
At shutter speed 1/1600, the sharpness is phenomenal and the colours very distinct and highly attractive.
May the symbolic flight of this bird into 2010 be the harbinger of all good things you have enumerated in the resolution for all of us.
That is a new species for me, and thanks to your expertise, your nicely frozen in-flight capture from a good vantage point demonstrates its salient features to a perfection. Those are surely very impressive tail feathers. What I wonder is, why you omitted the all important Phylum: Chordata from your otherwise very detailed and informative notes...
Our feelings towards the coming New Year are quite reciprocal!

WOW! What a fantastic shot, Loot!
You really caught that "long tail" in flight.
That is just spectacular.
What good timing: eye intensely focused, wings spread out, and that tail!!!
And the BG is just gorgeous as well.
It is indeed a fitting post to usher us into the new year.
Thanks for your good wishes, and the same to you and your family.

This is really a wonderful image and one very dear to me, as I know how difficult it was to capture this Long-tailed Widowbird. I know capturing any bird in flight is not easy, and on this day the wind was blowing which made the photographable opportunities even trickier. You have captured this striking bird hovering in the sky with its beautiful tailpiece like a elegant garment with great skill and expertise and it is really beautiful to look at the end result, as there is no trace of movement. The motion of this almost black beauty hanging in the air is seen with great clarity, just as the flash light caught in the eye and the white tips on the edges of the wings. That is the way photography should be done! Although not so many, due to work obligations, I want to thank you for all your great postings in 2009 and may you have a wonderful photographic year in 2010. Love.

Dear Loot, my friend
Are you brilliant? Yes you are!
For the last 30 years every time, when we travel from Harrismith (due south of Môreson Ranch) towards Mont aux Sources, we see Longtailed Widowbirds in the breeding season - what seems to be a bundle of black feathers, shooting out of the long grass into the air, struggling along a couple of metres and then falling back again.
It is a privilege - to see actually a flying bird and to top it – every single feather’s detail, the bird filling the whole frame. (I can visualise your family despairing about you sitting for hours waiting for the right moment!)
Concerning the “first reasonable shot” of a flying bird , please do not force us lesser members - reading such notes - to commit digital hara-kiri and give up altogether… It is a BEAUTY!
In your interesting notes I did not see mentioned Jackson’s widow bird euplectes jacksoni , which looks remarkably like the Longtailed Widowbird, portrayed by you. N.B.: Neither did I see it in Birds of Southern Africa by Newman!
Sometimes also called a Wydah, it is endangered in its habitat in East Africa. It is thrush-sized and the tail feathers grow up to 20 cm. I remember well, seeing it in one of David Attenborough programs - beating out a circular area - but leaving in the middle some tall grass standing (like a pole). When a female passes - the male throws himself into a bizarre dance - consisting of swaying, hopping and jumping, accompanied by a sizzling song and rattling wing accompaniment. All this is achieved while holding the majority of the tail feathers cocked forward over its back. Once a whole colony got going, was an amazing sight…
May be TN members ought to sponsor you – so that you can stop working – enabling you to photograph full time : ))
Best wishes for good health to you and your family,
- Argus (50614)
- [2009-12-30 4:39]
Must be marvellous to see a male Long-tailed Widowbird, let alone make such a fine capture as this!
The POV is perfect and the BG provides a perfect natural OOF contrast. Of the several shots you might have taken while it was flying by this in-flight capture must be the best choice with the wing position just right to show the orange and white shoulders that contrast strikingly with the black body and enormous veil tail. The composition is perfect too.
A super shot to welcome the New Year and I wish you health and happiness in 2010!

Hi Zoot, A very fine capture of this very unusual-looking bird. In flight you still managed to get a high quality image, which we all realise is difficult to do well. TFS. Murray.
such an elegance capture of the bird. This shot worth a thousand applause and appreciation. This is what I call beauty in flight. The photographic skills is beyond doubt and I dont want to talk about it to a man who is synonym to the manifestation of wildlife and trek nature.
The prettiness of the subject is the combination of patience too.
I believe this shot ahould be a winning shot that should appear in the best magazine.
Loot, youre such an angel that you allow us to share this view. People would sell it for so much, and can be seen in an exclusive magazine but you allow us to share all over the world.
May God bless You and the new year make you more prosperous in the photo makings.

I always set aside 20/40 minutes to view your posts.
The information is so very detailed.... just shows how much you love this hobby and NATURE itself.
Great way to start 2010 with this:
"We have another chance:-
- To make new resolutions and to try to get it right,
- To spread the love, that is ours to give,
- To make the world a better place to live,
- To rekindle old- or rouse new friendships,
- To apologise to those whom we’ve offended, and
- To forgive those who have done us wrong."
"TO FORGIVE THOSE WHO HAVE DONE US WRONG".....I see great humility within your sensitive soul, dear Loot.
If we all looked at life in this fashion there would be WORLD PEACE within weeks.
With repect to your image: OUTSTANDING!!!
Mario with deep respect for your lovely personality.

Very well captured with the light falling on the head, wing and then more on the lower part of the tail.Immaculate sharpness with striking definition and colours throughout. The light coloured undisturbing BG has also enhanced the subject, well done on another great photo.

excellent in flight capture - my congratulations, that's a hard task to do sucessfully. Showing the widowbird in such a pose you are well demonstrating the incredible inverse ratio between wing space for propulsion and tail wings for impression. A really conspicuous example for the theory of handicap principle in the sexual selection of the fittest.
And a very well composed image, too. Impressingly well reduced to a frame filling, diagonally placed dark main object in front of a perfectly contrasting background of fiery orange.
With thanks, and all my best wishes to you!
