Finally a bright sunny day at Conowigo Dam.

I had to grab my camera off the tripod for a series of shots of this bird as it suddenly emerged close to where I was standing.

As well as the cormorants (the eagles slyly fished away from photographers) the good weather brought out fishermen, one of whose line was swallowed by this cormorant - more pictures will follow over the next couple of days). It is not clear whether the bird swallowed hooks or the entire lure, but it carried on successfully fishing for catfish with little apparent difficulty. You can see the filament line dangling from its beak.

The gangly Double-crested Cormorant is a prehistoric-looking, matte-black fishing bird with yellow-orange facial skin. Though they look like a combination of a goose and a loon, they are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies and are a common sight around fresh and salt water across North America—perhaps attracting the most attention when they stand on docks, rocky islands, and channel markers, their wings spread out to dry. These solid, heavy-boned birds are experts at diving to catch small fish.

Hello Alan,
Very good moment.....stunning details and clarity.

Hello Alan,
Fantastic action shot showing plenty of detail. This is the moment I always hope to capture whenever I photograph blue herons. I love seeing birds as they catch their prey. It appears the cormorant might have some fishing line attached to it. Well done!!
