Sometimes when I go out to photo wildlife I get the unexpected and these photos show just what I mean.I have never been near enough to American Coots to show them running on water and yet they actually do.The birds use their wings for lift while their massive feet propel them along the water and they really can move quite quickly and no human can be so fast in the water. The coot in a way is an odd sort of looking animal with the feet like grebes,a chicken like bill and a duck like body. They are very aggressive birds and are not shy when it comes to getting into fights with other species but mostly they just get along with all the birds in the water with them.A feature that I like very much are the red eyes that they sport maybe the most pleasing aspect of their makeup as they are fairly dull looking as these adults seem to be and as babies, well they are hard to admire as they look like they have been beaten with an ugly stick, poor little birds.Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder but these "ugly ducklings" become anything but the beautiful swan, still I do like and enjoy seeing them just the same.I hope you enjoy the dynamic of this photo and the two in the workshop.Coots have their place in this world and I would not want it any other way as they are very entertaining. Bob

Hi Bob,
Great action pic you have here!
I see these coots a lot, and they often engage in this "running over the water" activity. But I also know how hard it is to catch them in action.
They are so fast. Amazing sharpness and beautiful light.
The poses are wonderful.
TFS. : )

Hello Bob, very nice stopped action with excellent focus on this capture of your Coots. This is the kind of shot I would love to capture myself.

Thanks, John

Did you keep the Mark III and the Canon 5d! Wow you!!!!! ;-) On a more serious note, you sure handle the Mark III very well, look at this picture! I also like their white bill contrasting the dark blanket they are covered with. And how I would use those big yellow feet to walk on water real fast. I love that picture so much, it is amusing and the notes are instructive. Did you compile all your notes, you could print a book with all your commentaries. You'd be surprise at how much you say and how you follow your mind pretty well from one picture to the other. There is Blub, a site where you download a program to make up a whole book (you can edit it from scratch) and then, the prices are fair and you get a beautiful book that you can even sell on their site! Anyway, this is a great action shot, Bob, and I laughed at your description of the ugly ducklings. Your picture is fascinating, I keep on looking at it. I find them beautiful, I behold an eye for animal that is really encompassing ;-) bye bye!

Hi Bob
Wonderful action shot. I have tryed shotting these guys running on the water many... times. When they decide to get up and go, they are gone. They are really cool to see running on the water. So I will keep trying and I can only hope to get some thing half as good as this. You have captured alot of amazing detail. Well done!!!
