Cyrtopodion (Mediodactylus) kotschyi (Kotschy’s Gecko)

This sweet (relatively :) ) gecko visited me while I was busy in the garden.

I want to dedicate this post to Bayram Göçmen (boreocypriensis), my beloved teacher/lecturer at Ege University, Department of Biology (Zoology Section), for getting his Full Professorship in zoology. I also thank him for his great helps and advices in my studies.

Gekkonids are relatively cosmopolit lizards and they differ from other lizards in having a vertical pupil-except the genus Phelsuma-. Most of the geckos are nocturnal (active at night) with some exceptions, but sometimes they can be active during day-light.

Cyrtopodion kotschyi distributes almost all parts of Turkey with different subspecies. It’s a nocturnal gecko species with a maximum total length of 10-11 cm. The dorsum is generally grey or brownish-grey with dark V-shaped markings on it.

It can be seen in the houses (according to my observations). I observed this species almost all nights (of 10 days) during my visit in my grandmohter’s house and also the other ones on the other buildings’ walls. It mainly feeds on small insects and spiders.
