[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This morning our visitors to the feeders were waiting for me to allow them to get to the bird seeds but before I left them to it this male House Sparrow got his photo taken in our apple tree.

I took the opportunity of using the dark BG of the pine woods on the other side of our hedge and the reddish trunk of a Scots Pine can just be made out to the left of the sparrow.

Though the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is still probably the most common and wisespread species in the world its numbers have declinefd drastically in many parts of Europe. Nobody knows exactly why yet but it might have something to do with the decline of old buildings that were used for nesting. Modern roofs don't give them the space to nest. Indeed, this why they are called House sparrows in English.

Certainly in my area the Tree Sparrow, an image of which I posted recently, is much more common. Unlike House Sparrows, Tree sparrows are more flexible in their nesting requirement and can use nesting boxes.

The general grey colour has given rise to the Swedish name 'Gråsparv'. The male has a grey crown and distiguishes him from other Passer species like the Spanish Sparrow and Tree Sparrow.

I took this image with my camera hand-held at a distance of about 4 meters. After slight cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,
Very nice capture of this sparrow. Good composition and details.

This is a perfect example of how I would like to image this picture. It is the way I would try and do it, with a dark but coloured background and crisp, clear details in the bird. Since I have not looked back too far into your archive, I'm not sure how to compare it against all of your others, but this is tops Ivan. Very nice camera work!

Hi Ivan,
Very nice image. The Tree Sparrow stands out from the soft background nicely. Very nice composition. Also thanks for your informative note.

Hi Ivan,

you really know how to put a house sparrow on scene! T&he light, the countless details, the attentive regard, very nice, Ivan!
Best regards

Hi Ivan,
you captured this bird very sharp and detailed.
The colors, epecially of the background, are very beautiful.
Although the bird is centered in the image, I like the composition.

Hi Ivan,

Good shot of Sparrow. It is strange how birds that used to so common are becoming scarce. Very good composition and perfectly sharp details.

Hi Ivan,

A wonderful house sparrow - one of the birds we see the most of here. I love the pose in the curve of the branch. Beautiful colors and sharp details. I love the dark background - it's only April and I'm getting tired of our blue skies as a background.

What a beautiful sparrow specimen in its prime Ivan, we are lucky you were there to capture this fine macro scene and now, be able to share it with you. Thank you for this courtesy, my friend,
Best regards,

Hi Ivan, the DoF is amazing, the clarity and colouration of the bird is excellent, you have made a plain sparrow look very special. Very nice work, best regards h

Hi Ivan. We have a large drop in numbers in all Sparrows . But the Dunnock has gone up. I like the BG you have by using the trees . The Sparrow has fine detail in the feathers with natural looking colours. Nice markings on the wings. well done TFs.

It doesn't happen often that I'm recognizing the bird as well as the tree. We have a few apple trees in the garden; couldn't be a problem really:-)
You captured this male Sparrow very well, Ivan.

Bellissima immagine, eccellenti OPOV e DOF, molto bella la composizione con i rami in sintonia con la bella posa, ottimi i dettagli del piumaggio e belli i colori, magnifico BG. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan,
Excellent shot of this cute Sparrow with immaculate sharpness and colours on its fluffy plumage. Superb lighting and exposure and I like this calm pose here. Fine DOF isolates it from the BG perfectly and a well chosen POV to portray it. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

...Det ser ut som att vinter är på väg tillbaka :( Vi hoppas att våren kommer tillbaka någon gång. Hoppas allt väl med dig och Ulla?

Hello Ivan
I personally really like House Sparrows and it is interesting that seem to be coming a rarity with you as they do with me in the UK..I remember years ago flocks of them..but now I rarely see them at all.
Picture wise this is incredible..You have thought it out very well to achieve the background which is so often overlooked and left to a long lense to blur whatever is behind the subject..I have to admit I use a flash to achieve the same effect but your thought out framing is far more pleasing to the eye.
Best Regards

bonjour ivan
l'oiseau est parfaitement net et detaillé et le BG est vraiment ideal pour rehausser le tout.

Hola Ivan,
hermosa captura,
perfecto foco y plumaje... bello bg,
sensacional pov.
saludos amigo.

Hello Ivan. Your house sparrow is slightly different than our eurasion sparrow and they are still abundant here in Malaysia. You bird capture is flawless as always with excellent perch against the clear background. That leafless twig creates very interesting perspective for a first class top quality image. Very well done and have a wonderful day. Best regards. Jusni

Hello Ivan,
Wonderful background that isolates the subject well. The subject is so sharp and crisp, the colors are spot on. Great work Ivan, thank you for sharing.

hello Ivan,
Although this is very common species, your shot shows is one of the best for P. domesticus with perfect sharp details, composition, POV. Lighting and eye contact great. Thanks for sharing my friend
best regards

We have noticed this alarming phenomenon in India too, Ivan. On week-ends, I visit my son's apartment in a huge, ultra modern residential complex with a sprawling garden in the middle. And yet not even a single House Sparrow in sight!
I see a small flock around my school and nesting in the verandah of a house opposite the school.
Your capture of this bird is excellent in quality. The profile view exhibits the plumage of this male very effectively.
Thanks for sharing it and regards.

Hi Ivan once more.
I like your garden so much. In my garden I have not opportunity to come nearer to birds so close. You are luckier gardener. Amazing scene with unique combination of lights and coloration of the BG. DOF and details of the sparrow are really perfect as well as entire composition. Well done and TFS.

Hi Ivan!
Maye it is "just" a sparrow, not a colourful kingfisher or something similar, but it is presented in very nice pose and with very good technique. I like natural light and colours, also DOF and sharpness are nice for watching. Nothing to add!
Best regards,

Hej Ivan dostum!

An impressive capture of a handsome male House sparrow in a lovely pose from a great vantage point.
The clarity, details and compositioan are all wonderful.
TFS and have a nice WE MF!
