Two-Tailed Pasha

Charaxes jasius (Linaeus, 1758)

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Suborder: Ditrysia

Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Charaxinae

Genus: Charaxes

Species: C. jasius

It's the bigest Rophalocera that exists in Portugal. A big butterfly, also very beautiful. Wingspan 8cm.
The larvas of this butterfly feeds on Arbutus unedo, know as "Medronheiro" in Portugal. They are very beautiful and have a green color, like the plant where they leave and feed.
This species hibernates during winter in larva's form till march when it completes the life cycle transforming into a pupa. About three weeks later, a new insect emerges from the pupa and we have this beautiful insect, the imago.
Is known in english as "Two-tailed pasha". In Portugal we call it "Borboleta do Medronheiro".
It has two generations a year in Portugal. Is at the second generation that the larvas hibernates during winter, on the foodplant.

Fantasitic! I love the colors, how rich they are. The soft background really brings this fellow into focus. Excellent job composition wise as well.

That is an outstanding photo. The butterfly is beautiful. The focus, DOF, and saturation spot on. Nice job on the close crop too. Some notes would have been nice.

Hello Felipe,

What a fantastic image! It's perfect: a beautiful subject, perfect exposure, needle-sharp focus, wonderful composition, shows this butterfly as well as it can be shown. That's one for my favorites folder! If I could, I'd give it more than 2 points, that's for sure. One of the very best photos I've seen on TrekNature.

Thanks,
John

Nice shot. Excellent sharpness and details. I feel the picture is a little too much tightly cropped,.... anyways, great work!

Absolutey beautiful butterfly and a perfect photo.

This is one species I am wanting to photograph very very much! Saw one last year in Rhodes, Greece - but alas got nowhere near it for a close up!

This is a delight to view and thanks for sharing it Filipe!

Matt
