Centaurea calcitrapa ((Linnaeus, 1753)
This floral species os often known as red star-thistle or purple starthistle. It is a very common plant in Europe.

Characters of this plant:
• Biannual or annual plant, thorny, size around one meter plus
• Grooved and hairless stem is upright ; it is extremely ramified
• Cauline leaves are pinnatisected ; ramifications quite linear
• Strong root system allowing the plant to survive from one year to another and to accept very dry condition all along his life
• Spiny involucre with basal spinlets
• White to purple capitulate of flowers
• Florets linked in capitulum, actinomorphic with five petals
• Calyx from the peripheral florets more or less asymmetric with five petals, the external one greater
• Extremely profuse plant, without any IUCN status.
