This is picture Nr 4 from my small series that I took on the lake on January the 30th. A Blue Tit again, because I missed all the picture of Black Tits and Willow Tits so I had to make with what I had.

Well, once again, I'm not so good with small birds and there are many better pictures on TN, but I still hope you'll be able to appreciate this one.

Many things have aleady been written on this bird, I think it is a bit boring to repeat them, but as there is nothing elso to write on this picture, here we are : let's go for some info about this species ! :-)


The Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus)

The azure blue crown and dark blue line passing through the eye and encircling the white cheeks to the chin give the Blue Tit a very distinctive appearance. The forehead and a bar on the wing are white. The nape, wings and tail are blue; the back is yellowish green ; the under parts mostly sulphur-yellow with a dark line down the abdomen. The bill is black, the legs bluish grey, and the irides dark brown. Young Blue Tits are noticeably more yellow.

Blue and Great Tits form mixed winter flocks, and the former are perhaps the better gymnasts in the slender twigs. A Blue Tit will often ascend a trunk in short jerky hops, imitating a Treecreeper. As a rule the bird roosts in ivy or evergreens, but in hard weather will shelter in a hole. Blue tits are very agile and can hang from almost anywhere.


The Blue Tit is a valuable destroyer of pests, though it has not an entirely clean sheet as a beneficial species. It is fond of young buds of various trees, and may pull them to bits in the hope of finding insects. No species, however, destroys more coccids and aphids, the worst foes of many plants. Seeds are eaten, as with all this family.

Blue Tit populations often decrease considerably during harsh winters or after poor breeding seasons where the weather is cold and wet, particularly if this coincides with the emergence of the caterpillars on which the nestlings are fed.

Superbe capture de cette belle mésange,la lumière venant de coté et laissant la poitrine de l'oiseau dans l'ombre, j'aurais donné un petit coup de flash, dans mon workshop j'ai obtenu un effet similaire en éclairant les tons foncés
J'ai aussi recadrélégérement pour mieux mettre la mésange en valeur

Hello Valérie,
The harsh lighting has created some extremes of light and shade in this capture of a Blue Tit and a reminder that to the naked eye the smae things can look very different in different lighting. The sharp contrasts are quite effective and make this portrait attractive from this semi-frontal POV and the wintery BG adds to the contrast.

You have done a very good job in this picture of the Blue Tit. First of all, its posture is endearing and it seems to be reacting to your presence with a degree of enthusiasm, as if it likes to be photographed.

Hi Valerie.
It is so characteristic pose for these brisk birds and it is looked very naturally. However, I am impressed with lens work. Despite the difficult lighting and contract subject BG is amazing (its colouration is very delicate and pleasant) and exposure of the image including image of the tit is spot on. It is clear eye-contact with this beauty is great too. Well done and TFS.
