I found this insect in the walk-in bird cage of 'Khao Kheo Open Zoo'. This insect is definitely not a zoo animal it is just a part of the ecological of this area.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hemiptera
Suborder: Heteroptera (true bugs)
Infraorder: Pentatomomorpha
Superfamily: Pyrrhocoroidea
Family: Pyrrhocoridae (red bugs, firebugs) (มวนแดง)

Pyrrhocoridae is a family of insects with more than 300 species world-wide.

A common species in parts of Europe is the firebug.

They are part of the order Hemiptera which are also known as the 'true bugs'.

A few are important crop pests. They are called cotton stainers because their red bodies get crushed along with the cotton they eat when it is harvested, and these stains are difficult to remove. Their feeding mechanism also cuts the fibres and hence affects the growth of the cotton ball. They caused massive problems in the United States during the industrial revolution.

Hello Jitti,
It is amazing how zoos can attract so many wild creatures!
This is a fine capture of a red bug: nice and sharp with excellent DOF and with fine contrasting BG that I guess is an alga-covered tree trunk. Great composition and lighting too!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Jitti,

What an interesting looking insect! The red and black against the natural background show off well. Excellent details. Wonder what it is.

I too had shot this insect in India last year, JC, but it was green in colour. Of course, I am going by your ID of it as a Cotton Stainer. It certainly is the same creature except for the difference in colour.
A brilliant shot from the top which shows its features and colours effectively.
TFS.

Hi Jitti,
Superb macro Shot, well focused, sharp, nice details.
Nice natural colors.

Hello Jitti!
Nice composition with very good contrast (I like differences between red colouration of bug and the stone BG). DOF, POV and details are as always very good, also the note is informative :)
Best greetings,
Radomir
