|A male Mongolian gazelle (Procapra gutturosa) mid stride. These gazelles inhabit large regions of the eastern Mongolian steppe and a sliver of Russia. They once ranged more widely into China and across much of Mongolia and southern Russia but have succumbed mostly to hunting pressures. |
They move nomadically throughout the steppe without adhering to fixed migratory patterns and can cover immense distances each year.
Most of the groups I encountered during a short 3 week research trip consisted of 20-100 individuals, but several groups of >300 were seen and one of ~15,000 was spotted. The largest recorded congregation of these animals in one place was estimated at over 200,000 in September 2007(Olsen et. al, 2009)
