I was driving back from Dhikala in Corbett Tiger Reserve when I spotted this Sambhar busily munching away, so much so that she didn't bother to move even when I was just a few feet away from her...

Also spelt 'Sambar' sometimes, the Sambhar (Cervus unicolor) is the largest deer found in Corbett. Its body is largely a uniform greyish-brown in colour, except for the creamy white on the backsides and under-tail areas. Males have antlers up to 1 m long that are periodically shed and replaced. Male sambhar also have dense manes on their necks.

Sambhar are mostly found in dense forests with a gently sloping to steep topography. They are known to reach altitudes as high as 3,700 m. Sambhar browse on leaves, berries, fallen fruit, leaves and tender bark of young trees, and also graze on grasses and sedges. These deer are mostly active solitary but may be found in small groups during the mating season.

They let out a loud, repetitive alarm call when they sense a threat. These signals are used by trackers to locate tigers.

Sambhar is the most important prey species for the tiger and presence of Sambhar usually indicates a good tiger habitat.

Hi Goldy,

The branches and the tree are framing well the deer. The point of view is showing the detals and colors of the sambhar deer. The early evening light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hi Goldy,
I envy you for your wonderful neighborhood, where you get the big Shambhar right before your lens. But you explained it well, you want to contribute to general awareness for nature at our doorsteps. So do I in Switzerland. I got a little tired of the stupidity of so many people over the years, so I limit myself to an occasional engagement now.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Goldy,

I am amazed to see how similar this Sambhar deer resembles our Mule deers. The face and ears are almost identical. Ours aren't threatened by tigers though. A very good shot with excellent details and beautiful shadings of his coat.
